³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ’s Kurashiki Facility Resumes Production of Electrical Steel Sheet
After Completing First Phase of Capacity Expansion

³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ Corporation today announced that electrical steel sheet production resumed this month at its West Japan Works’ Kurashiki steel facility, where Phase I of a capacity expansion was completed on schedule in July, doubling the plant’s high-grade non-oriented (NO) electrical steel sheet capacity at a cost of about 49 billion yen.

Electrical steel sheet products, which contain additives such as silicon and aluminum, offer excellent magnetic properties including high magnetic flux density and low iron loss. Grain-oriented electrical steel sheet exhibits superb magnetic properties in a single (rolling) direction, making it ideal for the iron cores of power transformers, etc. Non-oriented electrical steel sheet, which exhibits excellent magnetic properties that are largely uniform in all directions, has applications such as the iron cores of motors.

With the move to electrify automobiles gaining momentum as global society pursues carbon neutrality, demand for high-grade non-oriented electrical steel sheet, an essential material for electric vehicle drive motors, is on the rise, particularly in Japan, North America and Europe. In anticipation of rising global demand for high-grade non-oriented electrical steel sheet, ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ is expanding its supply capacity in this field. The company is now executing Phase II of an expansion plan, with a budgeted cost of around 46 billion yen, aiming to triple the company’s original capacity by the fiscal year ending March 2027.

In response to global initiatives to enhance energy efficiency and growing electricity demand supported by the expansion of renewable energy sources, ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ is also increasing its supply capacity for grain-oriented steel sheet. In February 2024, ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ and India-based JSW Steel Limited established JSW JFE Electrical Steel Private Limited as a joint venture for the end-to-end production of grain-oriented steel sheet in India. Full-scale production targeted at India’s growing market for such steel is expected to commence in the fiscal year ending March 2028.

³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ’s electrical steel sheet products offer world-class quality and performance, including magnetic flux density and iron loss, reflecting the advanced manufacturing technologies developed by the company over many years. Going forward, ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ͵ÅÄ will continue to enhance its electrical steel sheet production operations in Japan and overseas, as well as further strengthen its world-class manufacturing capabilities, including to produce ecologically sound products that help to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to a more sustainable world.
